Part №12. «My Tretjakov’s chess gallery...»

We devote today's release of a chess marathon to one of the heroes of the second intermediate finish - to Anatoly Ivanovich Kostenko.

001Anatoly Kostenko, 2009

«I was born in 1949 in the village Lipjanka of Shpoljansky area of the Cherkassy region. An ordinary Ukrainian village on the coast of a small river with the strange name Rotten Тikich. The family was big – there were 5 children. Two elder brothers, me and two younger children: my sister and my brother. My elder brothers taught me to read rather early. They took an interest in chess a little bit and, naturally, trained me chess moves. Later on they gave me the book after Lipnitsky and Ratner “Selected parties of chess players of Ukraine”, and I, a six-year-old boy, began to play the duels published in it according to notation. So I comprehended a chess science.

There was a school then. Many senior pupils looked at me with surprise when received a mate … In those days practically each pupil subscribed the newspapers such as “Yuny leninets”, “Zirka”, “The Pionerskaya Pravda”. In each of them there was a chess department. (By the way, I consider that chess departments were a good smithy for skilled solvers and future composers...) Naturally, I started to participate in the competitions on the decision of the chess compositions held by these editions. The first success came in 1964. I came out the winner in one of such competitions. The chess department in the newspaper was conducted by the master of sports Yevsey Isaakovich Polyak. The kindest person! Imagine that on each decision he personally sent me the detailed analysis of my answer! As a prize I received “The Chess dictionary” …

Somehow the magazine “Chess in the USSR” has got to me in my school library. And, it was in the single copy! I am surprised till now, how it could get there... So I have learnt about existence of the special edition for chess players. And the next year I became the subscriber of this magazine. At once I started to participate in decision competitions, get acquainted with debuts, the theory, etc. I learnt about non- orthodox composition, fairy tales, retro analysis. (By the way, even now I consider that the ability to solve a retro problem is "aerobatics" for the solver.) I took part in chess superiority of school, area as well…

My engagement in chess nicely helped my studies - it nicely developed logic thinking that allowed me to leave school with a gold medal.

After school I worked in the collective farm, then there was my service in the army in GSATG (a group of the Soviet army troops in Germany). In 1971 I entered the Melitopol institute of mechanization of agriculture on the electrification faculty. It was a nice time! I was intensively engaged in chess. I executed the 1st category. I was the captain of a faculty chess players’ team. I took part in a set of competitions on the decision of chess compositions. Recently I have revised my archives. Not all the documents have certainly remained, but I counted about fifty various diplomas for victories in the competitions of the solvers. I have a small chess library - 170 books. Half of them are the prize-winning books...

002The Cup is at chess players of the electrification faculty. Such event should be noted!

After the disintegration of the USSR practically in all editions chess departments stopped their existence. The life has risen in price... It became impossible to subscribe the specialized periodical press (in a due time I subscribed simultaneously “Chess in the USSR”, "Chess", “A 64-chess review”, and also the magazine "Problems"!). It was necessary to forget about a composition for a while...

In the beginning of 2000s I started to come back to a chess composition. Certainly, not so actively, as in 70s, but I try to behave in shape...

Was I engaged in drawing up compositions? Generally not. In the late sixties and the beginning of 70s I made them simply for myself. Basically those were the problems which I offered for the decision to my friends. In 1985 the magazine “Nauka i suspilstvo” declared the 2nd international competition on drawing up problems on a co-operative mate. I have recollected the early hobby and have sent one problem for the sake of interest. To my great surprise it was awarded the 3rd favourable mention...

Here is all my chess career in brief.

I graduated from the institute with distinction in 1976. Since 1977 (excluding 1980-1982) I have lived and worked in Priazov area of the Zaporozhye region. In 1986-1987 I conducted chess department in the regional newspaper “Priazovskaya nov’”. I have got grown-up children - the son and the daughter. There are three grand daughters and the grandson.

Sometimes they ask me: “What does the chess composition mean to you?”

I shortly answer: “It is my Muse... It is my Tretjakov’s chess gallery...”

And the marathon proceeds. Today I will ask the participants to paint figures in all competitive problems.

№48. The chess question

Long time in Saudi Arabia there existed the law forbidding chess. What this prohibition was connected with?

Meet you in a week!
